National anthem yet again manipulated for attention online
by miel ~ December 13th, 2007. Filed under: Social Issues, china. We can remember a scenario months back when NameWee got into trouble with the Malaysian government when he uploaded a video in youtube called “Negarakuku“, attracting loads of traffic to his song created. Apparently, the Malaysian government has not forgiven him. I came across a similar video online, however it is on The PRC national anthemn.
The anthem was not changed. However, Images were inclusive with the national anthemn showing pictures of prostitution raids happening in Hongkong. It shows a morbid truth about how certain mainlander ladies prefer an easy route out to earn in a lucrative industry of flesh trading.
In the video, the official Chinese flag depicting stars were altered to show iconic legs of women. The video, of course, caused an uproar to Chinese netizens who viewed it.
Why hasn’t the netizens wise up about the idea, that there are certain matters in which you cannot make a joke about. Of course, in the cause for NameWee, he chose to perform in a unique rap “Yo-yo” way, altering the national anthem to bring the message forth about social issues faced in Malaysia.
I actually find the Malaysia national anthem nice and soothing. Although the concept about its creativity might be limited and borrowed from a Hawaiian song called Mamula Moon, the lyrics of the Malaysia Anthem, like all national songs are still very patriotic.
The lyrics to “Negaraku” is as follows:
Negaraku
Tanah tumpahnya darahku
Rakyat hidup bersatu dan maju
Rahmat bahagia Tuhan kurniakan
Raja kita selamat bertakhta
Rahmat bahagia Tuhan kurniakan
Raja kita selamat bertakhta.
Its idiomatic translation is:
My country, my native land
The people living united and progressive
May God bestow His blessings and happiness
May our Ruler have a successful reign
May God bestow His blessings and happiness
May our Ruler have a successful reign.
The Chinese flag alteration however, is rather something beyond comprehension for me. Of course, some on you can stand up and challenge and say what’s the issue, you see all this in modern propoganda chinese art nowadays, but just take a look below, you will realise how meaningless actually it can be.
